Closing • Stroke By Stroke: The Art of Bill Griffiths

Stroke by Stroke: The Art of Bill Griffiths is a comprehensive look at the many lives Griffiths has lived through his art.

Bill Griffiths has lived, taught, and created in Worcester for over 50 years. A technical master of color, light, and the human form, Griffiths influenced generations of artists during his 40-plus years as an educator at the Worcester Art Museum (WAM).

The exhibition title “Stroke by Stroke” carries a triple meaning: noting the many individual marks needed to complete each piece, the role art has played in Bill’s physical recovery from multiple strokes, and a dose of Bill’s signature cheeky humor. The show will feature selections from Bill’s many chapters, from advertisements to studies in color and form, and from historical mythology to deeply personal works - some of which have never been shown publicly, including:

  • The Salvador Series: A poignant tribute to his former lover and muse who died of AIDS in the 1980s.

  • Gems: Bill’s most recent series, serving as the visual manifestation of his recovery from a series of strokes as he relearned hand-eye coordination through practice.

  • Lewdie Nudies: a selection of Bill’s erotic works. To ensure the artist’s work remains uncensored while providing viewers the choice to engage with adult content, these pieces will be presented in a separate room next to the main gallery.

Gallery Hours: Fridays 4-8pm, Saturdays 12-6pm, through April 25, 2026. Private viewings available by appointment. Free to attend, though donations to the Gallery are graciously accepted.

Hunchback Gallery is on the 2nd floor of 75 Webster Street. Free parking is available in the lots across the street (behind 78 Webster Street).

Accessibility: Please be advised that due to a neighborhood utility disruption, the Gallery is currently operating on generator power. As a result, the freight elevator is temporarily out of service, and the Gallery is currently accessible only by stairs. Building management are working to restore full power and elevator access. As of March 23, it is unknown when this will be resolved. Guests with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact the Gallery directly with any questions.

Building management are working to restore full power and elevator access, but as of March 23, it is unknown when this will be resolved. Guests with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact the Gallery directly with any questions.

NEGATIVBURN w/ Matthew Flynn

POSTPONED TO FEBRUARY 1 (originally scheduled for January 25, thanks SNOW.)

Humorist Matthew Flynn presents NEGATIVBURN, a unique variety event at Hunchback Gallery. With a lineup of legends, provocateurs, and performers, this afternoon event will sit somewhere between a high-art salon and a classy bake sale fundraiser.

Doors open at 1:30pm, entertainment will run from 2 - 4pm. Admission is free, though a $5 donation is suggested. Proceeds go toward the noble cause of paying off Matthew Flynn’s medical bills (an interactive performance piece in itself).

Featured performers:

Bibbe Hansen: a veteran of Warhol’s Silver Factory and the 1960s NY experimental theater and film underground. She is the daughter of fluxus artist Al Hansen and mother of the artist Channing Hansen and pop musician Beck. A multiverse performer, writer, and visual artist, Bibbe has been a member of the international online performance collective second front since 2008. She teaches and lectures on art and the creative process.

Niki Luparelli: a local chanteuse and classically trained singer who balances the sparkle of old Hollywood glamour with bawdy banter and a mastery of the absurd. She is a prominent performer and producer in the New England scene, recognized for her tribute shows, stand-up comedy, and cabaret productions.

Vi: a visual and performance artist known for her humorous and informative approach to skincare and beauty. Through social media, she has gained recognition for her distinctive pairing of colorful makeup and comedic storytelling.

Caroline Moore: an improvisor and stand-up comedian who frequently performs alongside other artists in the comedy scene, exploring humorous and absurd themes through live sketch and improv scenes.

In addition to the performers, guests can also experience Hunchback Gallery’s current exhibit [Re]Frame the Dark.

Hunchback Gallery is on the 2nd floor of 75 Webster Street, Worcester, MA, accessible by stairs or freight elevator. Free parking is available in the lot across the street.
